The deck is the wooden part of the skateboard on which you stand while riding. The front section is called nose, the tail is the area of the skateboard deck from the back last two screws to the back tip of the board. This area is also sometimes called the kick. Skateboard decks are classically made from 7 plys of  wood, usually canadian maple, laminated together. Depending on the style of skateboarding (street, vert/pool, freestyle) there are different shapes which are specially designed for the specific purpose. Decks for kids have to meet the same criteria any other quality deck has to fulfill. High quality raw materials have to be processed accurately. Most manufacturers of skateboards supply decks which are specially designed for kids. The difference between these decks for kids and the usual "full-grown" ones is only the size.
