The deck is the wood part of the skateboard on which you stand while riding. The front section is called nose, the tail is the area of the skateboard deck from the back last two screws to the back tip of the board. This area is also sometimes called the kick. During the last decades a lot of different shapes have been tried, double tail, double nose, fishtail (oldschool) and some other weird shapes. Today's decks are mostly double nose decks. Skateboard decks are classically made from 7 plys of wood, usually canadian maple, laminated together. Depending on the style of skateboarding (street, vert/pool, freestyle) there are different shapes which are specially designed for the specific purpose. Frequently used terms are e.g. "pop" which means the motion of popping the tail to the ground (to do an ollie or flip) and the pysical property of the deck. Another important term is the concave which describes how much the skateboard bows in the middle of the deck. Skateboards are not made totally flat but with concave. This makes them a lot stronger and gives them more pop. The size of a skateboad is similar to the shape and includes it's concave, width, length, wheelbase, and the length of nose and tail. Shape and size basically depend on the skaters preferences but also on his physique.
